The Department of Education has published a report into a review of restraint and seclusion in educational settings.
This report has made six recommendations for change which are intended to ensure a consistent child centred approach is taken across all educational settings.
Commenting on the report, Education Minister, Michelle McIlveen said:
“I have endorsed the six recommendations for change which will be initiated after the end of the current mandate.
“We do not underestimate the complexities of this area and the impact it has had on everyone involved. We have taken time to listen to the views of stakeholders, including parents with lived experience and those who support our most vulnerable children and young people.
“Importantly, we recognise that while restraint should only be used as a last resort and in some educational settings may never be used at all, change is required to ensure that children and young people and the education staff who work with them are protected. It is vital that clear and transparent processes are accessible to those involved, including parents/carers.
“I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who has supported this work to date, including my Ministerial colleagues, Minister Swann and Minister Long.”
