Today’s results, awarded to over 32,000 GCSE students across Northern Ireland, reveal that 82.7% of students received grade C/4 and above while 31% received grade A/7 and above. This year marks the completion of the return to pre-pandemic awarding arrangements.

Praising students on their achievements the Minister said:

“Congratulations to all the young people who received their GCSE results today. They have all worked incredibly hard and this has been reflected in the grades they have deservedly achieved.

“Pupils in Northern Ireland have once again performed impressively and have continued to outperform their counterparts in England and Wales. This is testament to their own efforts and the hard work, dedication and commitment of teachers throughout Northern Ireland.   I commend all our pupils as they move on to their next stage of education, employment or training.”

The Minister added:

“Today marks the first step in their future journey. There are many pathways open to students who may be feeling unsure of their next steps. I encourage anyone who wants help to seek advice on the full range of options available to them and take time to consider the many choices on offer.”

Notes to editors:

  1. Results issued today are for GCSE qualifications.
  2. There is an open qualifications market in Northern Ireland, which means that schools and colleges can choose to offer GCSE qualifications from awarding organisations other than the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment (CCEA). This includes AQA, OCR, Pearson and WJEC. Qualifications to be delivered in schools must comply with the Department of Education requirements.
  3. The majority of GCSE qualifications taken in Northern Ireland are CCEA qualifications.
  4. CCEA has set up a dedicated results helpline which offers advice and guidance for students who are expecting their 2024 results. The results helpline will be open from Friday 16 August to Wednesday 28 August, Monday to Friday, from 9.00am until 5.00pm.
